This may have been my favorite place I ate in Portland and we had some of the best meals I've ever had there. Because the portions are huge and there was no way I could possibly eat more, I settled for getting back in the line to order some merionberry jam (you have to try this) to eat with the little amount of biscuit I was able to put aside for round 2.
The place was packed (at 9AM on a Thursday) and there were so many other dishes I saw that I wished I could try. The biscuit was buttery and fluffy- and those two words don't even go together! The cheese was nothing like the stuff I take out of plastic from my fridge. In the case of Pine State Biscuits, there are no Ifs- they take their time to make the best egg and cheese biscuit you have ever tasted and it's worth every second of the wait. If there were more people working, if the service was faster, etc. In some cases, wearing my fast paced NYC hat, I thought, this really could be sped up if. In each case, food was worth the line and the wait. I can think of 3 or 4 places we went and waited in line to eat. I just did a quick calculation and in Portland, I spent approximately 30% of my days asleep, 25% shopping/sighseeing/walking, 25% EATING, and 20% waiting in lines to do the aforementioned 25% eating. I arrived at Pine State at approximately 7:15 am on a Monday morning. Rise and Shine was also mentioned at about spot #10. The hushpuppies are also absolutely wonderful.My daughter who lives in Denver, near Rise and Shine Biscuits, a favorite spot for both of us, sent me an article that said that Pine State has the best biscuits in the US.
