They already have used photographs of the beehive in advertisements. They think customers will mention it to friends, who will decide to have their hair done at Bangz.
Morrison and Carden have a strategy for exploiting the record. “I was thrilled,” Morrison said, speaking in the posh lobby of the downtown Bangz, where customers sip white wine and read Connoisseur magazine (or the Guinness Book of World Records) as they wait to have their hair done. Only a few weeks ago did their advance copy of the book arrive. Only last October did they learn that their record would be included in the 1988 Guinness edition. “You don’t usually get that in this business.” “What we were trying to do was get the employees to see that with a team effort, anything, no matter how farfetched, is achievable,” Carden said. It was a period of unease, knowing that failure would send the troops the wrong signal. They followed those instructions and waited. They visited Guinness headquarters in London to get instructions on how to document their record. Though they got some press coverage in London, they knew they wanted to pursue immortality, and even more coverage, by getting into Guinness.
